A few days ago, Japanese chip manufacturer Renesas electronics said that a factory in Kumamoto, southwest Japan, shut down because of the power supply line caused by lightning.

Renesas electronics reported that at 5:43 a.m. Japanese time on July 5, in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, the rainstorm caused by Typhoon "El" struck the transmission line of the chuanjiri factory of Renesas group, resulting in an instantaneous voltage drop, the production equipment of the factory was temporarily stopped, and the production of the factory was affected.

According to the report, the voltage drop lasted longer than any accident in the past decade and the previous estimate made by Renesas, which has led to the temporary shutdown of about 90% of the production equipment of the plant. On the other hand, after the instantaneous voltage drops, the clean room still keeps running.

Reza said that the company is restarting its production equipment, and some production processes have resumed operation on July 6. The company expects to resume full production capacity on July 11.

Reza also said that the instantaneous voltage drop damaged some products in process. The total loss caused by this part of damaged WIP and shutdown is equivalent to two weeks of factory output, and the company will try its best to make up for this part of the loss.

Earlier, on June 26, an earthquake occurred in Kumamoto, Japan. At that time, the earthquake also led to the temporary shutdown of some equipment in RISA chuanjiri factory. Later, however, Reza reported that the plant and production equipment had not been damaged by the earthquake.

After the 7.4 magnitude earthquake in northeastern Japan in March this year, the production of three factories of Renesas electronics near the epicenter of the earthquake was also affected.

According to Fitch‘s rating report last year, Renesas is the world‘s third largest automotive chip company and the world‘s largest microcontroller (MCU) supplier, with a market share of 19%.

According to the company‘s financial report, the annual operating revenue of Renesas in 2021 was 9944.18 yen, an increase of 38.9% year-on-year; The operating profit was 183.601 billion yen, a year-on-year increase of 181.8%. Among them, the revenue of automotive chip business was 462.3 billion yen, an increase of 35.6% year-on-year.
