ROHM promotes a new type of operational amplifier with excellent EMI resistance performance

    With the development of the global Internet of Things and the rapid advancement of the "four modernizations" of automobiles (electrification, intelligence, networking, and sharing), the application range of sensors is becoming more and more extensive. As operational amplifiers and comparators for detecting and amplifying sensor signals, their role will also become increasingly important. Recently, ROHM held an online press conference to launch a highly EMI resistant operational amplifier "BD8758xYx-C" series. The new product has ultra-high anti-interference performance in the "EMARMOUR series", which helps reduce the design time of anomaly detection systems and improve system reliability.
Why are operational amplifiers and comparators so important?
    In a circuit, a sensor is a product that converts weak environmental changes into electrical characteristics. After receiving a signal, it is converted through an operational amplifier and comparator. During this process, the operational amplifier or comparator is required to have high accuracy or low error characteristics, so that the amplified or compared signal is reliable. By optimizing the parameters of the operational amplifier such as input bias current, input offset voltage, and equivalent input noise voltage, the accuracy of the sensor system can be improved. It can be said that operational amplifiers are the key to improving the accuracy of sensor systems.

    The noise that hinders the improvement of sensor system accuracy mainly comes from two aspects: EMI (electromagnetic interference) and EMS (electromagnetic tolerance). EMI refers to the noise generated by the IC itself, which can bring errors to the overall system accuracy. EMS refers to the interference of external noise on the IC, which may cause misoperation. Therefore, noise is an unnecessary signal that can lead to accuracy errors and malfunctions. In sensor applications that require high accuracy, the low noise and anti-interference performance of operational amplifiers are essential.
    EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) is an indicator for evaluating noise, which can assess how much external noise interference a chip can withstand through both EMI and EMS. In response, ROHM has developed low noise operational amplifiers and excellent anti EMS performance operational amplifiers.
ROHM is committed to the development of on-board operational amplifiers and comparators
    It is reported that in 2020, the annual shipment of ROHM operational amplifiers and comparators exceeded 500 million pieces, with the vehicle part accounting for 25%, mainly concentrated in steering switches, anti-theft devices, safety airbags and other occasions. In the future, more and more applications of operational amplifiers and comparators will also be applied. The circuit design engineers of ROHM pursue the anti-interference performance required at the moment when developing a new series of operational amplifier products. By combining circuit design, layout, and process, we aim to develop high-precision ultra-low noise operational amplifiers and EMI resistant operational amplifiers with strong resistance to external noise in harsh environments.
    ROHM is committed to the development of CMOS operational amplifiers that do not cause noise interference, ultra-low noise, and low offset. Currently, ultra-low noise products include eight products, including the LMR1802 series. These products not only pursue low noise performance, but also ease of use. By improving phase margin, they ensure high stability and meet the high-precision requirements of increasingly low voltage sensor systems
    In terms of anti EMI performance, ROHM owns the EMARMOUR series of products, and EMARMOUR is a trademark of ROHM. It is only used for products with excellent anti-interference performance with very small output voltage fluctuations in international immunity evaluation tests. EM is the abbreviation for electromagnetic radiation, and ARMOUR means armor. The operational amplifier developed by ROHM, like armor, is immune to external noise interference. The EMARMOUR series products have excellent anti EMI performance and do not tolerate external noise interference. They can also help reduce system design time and design costs. Even system designs with short delivery times can respond quickly. In addition, using ROHM‘s EMARMOUR series products can achieve excellent noise reduction without any filtering measures. When using 4ch products, up to 18 components can be reduced, fully reducing noise reduction measures.
    Currently used in vehicles with EMARMOUR ™ The product lineup of operational amplifiers and comparators includes the four EMARMOURTM series bipolar products launched in 2018, as well as the new products BD87581YG-C and BD87582YFVM-C launched at this launch. The new products are CMOS type operational amplifiers, which have significantly improved bias current and conversion rate compared to the previous generation of bipolar products.
Excellent performance of new products
    It is reported that the new product has achieved excellent anti-interference performance in four international anti-interference tests (electronic radiation immunity test ISO 11452-2, BCI test ISO 11452-4, close range radiation immunity test ISO 11452-9, DPI test IEC 62132-4), reducing the burden of noise reduction design and eliminating the need for noise control measures, which helps to shorten the design cycle of applications and improve their reliability.
    At the same time, this series of products is equipped with a high-precision simulation model - ROHM Real Model, which is ROHM‘s own modeling technology. By designing and recombining the overall characteristics of transistor circuits according to their functions, excellent characteristic reproducibility is achieved. Compared with traditional SPICE models, the biggest advantage is that the simulation values are completely consistent with the actual IC values.
    This series of products meets the AEC-Q100 standard and can be used in various automotive and industrial equipment with high noise reduction requirements for electronic circuits. The new product includes a single channel BD87581YG-C and a two channel BD87582YFVM-C, which were mass-produced in May this year. There are also four channel products in the series that are still under development.
How to select a model?
    How to choose appropriate operational amplifiers and shunt resistors during the design process? ROHM can provide different solutions by using shunt resistors to measure the output current of IGBTs, MOSFETs, and motor drivers, to control motor speed and prevent circuit damage. Customers can choose according to different application scenarios, such as high-precision control and high-speed response, and ROHM has corresponding solutions.
