The difference between buck, boost, and boost charging ICs

Step-down charger IC
    The buck charger IC is suitable for applications where the minimum input voltage always exceeds the maximum battery voltage (VBATT), such as single battery 5V USB. Even if the maximum required charging power exceeds 15W provided by the 5V USB Type-C (such as most smartphones), a step-down charger IC can still be used as long as it can handle the higher VIN operating voltage and power supported by the USB PD.
Booster charger IC
    Booster charger IC is suitable for applications with VIN lower than the maximum VBATT, such as 5V USB with 2 batteries. This type of charger IC is only suitable for applications with a power requirement of less than or equal to 15W. If higher power is required, a boost/boost charger IC is required. Using boost charger ICs for multi cell battery applications with lower power requirements can avoid using additional components such as USB PD controllers, thereby saving costs.
Boost voltage charger IC
    The charger IC using a voltage up and down topology allows VBATT to be higher, lower, or equal to the VIN of the device, which means that the battery can continue to charge through any power supply voltage until it reaches its target voltage. In this way, fast charging becomes possible under a wider range of conditions, although it does require a larger charger IC packaging size. Usually, if connected to an input power supply, the boost/boost charger IC can operate in three working modes: boost mode, buck mode, and boost/boost mode. The VIN in boost mode is lower than VBATT, the VIN in boost mode is higher than VBATT, and the VIN in boost mode is almost equal to VBATT. The voltage boost charger IC can provide high power throughout the entire PD voltage range, while also being backward compatible with 5V traditional USB. This type of charger IC is most commonly used in USB PD applications where multiple batteries are connected in series, such as laptops, smartphones, and mobile power supplies.
