Shanghai, China, February 28, 2023- Toshiba Electronic Components and Storage Co., Ltd. ("Toshiba") announced today the launch of the in vehicle DC brushless motor gate drive IC [1] - "TB9083FTG", which is suitable for applications such as electric power steering systems (EPS), electric braking systems, and line control gear shifting systems. The product will start mass shipping today.
The onboard equipment must be able to provide relevant performance that meets the requirements of ISO 26262 Road Vehicle Functional Safety Standard. The semiconductor chips and electronic components used in on-board equipment are no exception. TB9083FTG is a new product that can control and drive an external N-channel power MOSFET used to drive a 3-phase DC brushless motor. It is very suitable for meeting the requirements of ISO 26262 Functional Safety Standard Second Edition [2] and supports ASIL-D [3] for high safety level in vehicle systems. Therefore, the new product is highly suitable for in vehicle applications using DC brushless motors, such as EPS, electric braking, and wire controlled shift systems.
For systems such as EPS that require safety relays, TB9083FTG has a built-in 3-channel gate drive for controlling and driving safety relays for motors and power supplies. This can avoid the need for external components and help reduce the number of components.
TB9083FTG adopts P-VQFN48-0707-0.50-005 packaging and has a solderable side wing structure. This package facilitates visual inspection of solder joints using Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI) systems and helps improve solder joint reliability. In addition, Toshiba has verified that it can withstand 3000 cycles in the mounting temperature cycle test and obtained relevant data, allowing customers to use the QFN package with complete confidence.
Compared to existing products, by adopting a small packaging (7.0mm) × At 7.0mm (typical value), the mounting area of TB9083FTG has decreased by approximately 66% [5]. This helps to control the mounting area and provides an effective redundant design to ensure a higher level of safety by increasing the number of electronic components on the ECU circuit board.
Toshiba will continue to steadily introduce improved features that meet the requirements of the second edition of ISO 26262 standard into motor gate drive ICs for three-phase brushless DC vehicles, without contributing to the electrification and safety of vehicle equipment.
