A4964 is a three-phase sensorless, brushless DC (BLDC) motor controller suitable for N-channel power MOSFETs, specifically designed for automotive applications. It is designed to provide motor control function for the system, in which the small microcontroller serves as the communication interface between the central ECU and intelligent fault and status processing. A4964 provides power and watchdog for the microcontroller, as well as a high-voltage interface between the microcontroller and the central ECU and ignition switch. A4964 can also function as an independent microcontroller for remote motor control. The motor is driven by a three-phase sine current driver, and this commutation does not require a separate position sensor. It can be determined by monitoring the back electromotive force of the motor. The sensorless startup scheme includes forward and reverse pre rotation (wind power generation) detection and synchronization, and makes A4964 suitable for various motor and load combinations. A4964 operates using duty cycle (voltage) control, current (torque limitation) control, and closed-loop speed control. The control mode, working mode, and control parameters are programmed through an SPI compatible serial interface. The single current detection amplifier provides peak current limitation and average current measurement through a serial interface. Integrated diagnosis provides indication of undervoltage, overheating, and power bridge faults, and can protect the power switch in most short circuit conditions. A4964 is packaged with 36 terminal QFN and 32 pin QFP, both with exposed heat dissipation pads.
